About Us

Saltburn Surf Shop has been at the heart of the North East surf scene for decades, with roots dating back to 1986. It was then that Gary Rogers began serving the growing community of surfers along the Lower Promenade in Saltburn-by-the-Sea, driven by a passion for cold-water surfing and a deep connection to the coastline.

As surfing along the North Yorkshire coast continued to grow, so did the demand for quality equipment and trusted advice. In 1991, that demand led to the opening of Saltburn Surf Shop—a permanent space dedicated to providing surfers with the best wetsuits, boards, and essential gear for the often challenging conditions of the North Sea.

The shop has always been built on real surf experience. Gary has been part of the Saltburn scene since the late 1970s and is widely recognised as one of the pioneers of surfing on the North East coast. Over the years, he competed at both national and international level, becoming British Surfing Champion in 2004.

Beyond competition, Gary played a key role in shaping the local surf culture—founding the Saltburn Open and helping to build the tight-knit community that exists today.

In 2024, the shop entered a new chapter under the ownership of his son, Evan Rogers. Having grown up in the water, Evan learned to surf at just seven years old and quickly developed into one of the standout longboarders on the North East coast.

Evan has built an impressive competitive career of his own. A multiple-time British longboard champion, he has also taken silver at the European Junior Longboard Championships and represented Wales on the world stage, including at the ISA World Longboard Championships. He has consistently placed highly in respected UK events, with podium finishes at competitions such as King of the Point—reflecting both his style and adaptability across a wide range of conditions.

Like his dad, Evan proudly represents his Welsh roots alongside his deep connection to Saltburn, blending tradition with a modern, progressive approach to surfing. His experience travelling and competing internationally feeds directly back into the shop—ensuring it continues to evolve while staying true to its core values.

Located beneath the iconic Saltburn Cliff Lift, the shop sits at the centre of one of the UK’s most unique surf spots. Today, Saltburn Surf Shop remains a true hub for the community—offering carefully selected equipment, honest advice, and a space shaped by decades of experience in the water.

For us, it’s always been about more than just gear—it’s about heritage, community, and a lifelong dedication to surfing, passed from one generation to the next.
